Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) was a giant of the industrial revolution, designing and building ships, bridges, tunnels, and dockyards, and achieving many breakthroughs in engineering. He is most famous for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Great Western Railway, and the SS Great Britain, then the largest ship ever built.
The portrait is a detail for the famous photograph of Brunel standing by the giant launching chains of the SS Great Eastern by Robert Howlett, 1857.
