Humphrey Davy was a Cornish chemist and inventor who discovered, among other things, the elements potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, strontium and barium, and invented the field of electrochemistry. He also invented the ‘Davy Lamp’ and an early form of light bulb, and was the mentor of Michael Faraday who made great advances in the science of electricity. The portait is an 1830 engraving based on the painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence.
