Peromedusae or Periphylla jellyfish, from ‘Kunstformen der Natur’, pendant necklace
‘Peromedusae’ jellyfish (now called Periphylla periphylla) or ‘helmet jellyfish’ – a luminescent, red-coloured species of the deep sea. Seen from below.
Ernst Haeckel (1834 – 1919) was a German biologist, physician, professor, and artist who discovered and described thousands of new species. ‘Kunstformen der Natur’ (Art Forms in Nature) is a book of lithographic and halftone prints made from his drawings, in which he set out to convey the beauty, intricacy and organisation of natural forms. His work was influential not only in the natural sciences but also in early 20th-century art, architecture, and design.
The pendant setting is made from metal alloy and the glass cabochon measures 25 x 18mm.
