Coral illustration by Elizabeth Blackwell, from an 18th Century herbal
Corallum rubrum – red coral, by Elizabeth Blackwell, from her book ‘A Curious Herbal’, 1730s. Blackwell’s beautiful botanical illustrations were not only drawn, but also engraved and coloured by her own hand. This was unusual, but necessary to cut costs; she produced her ‘Curious Herbal’ to raise money to secure her husband from debtor’s prison. The Herbal was issued in weekly installments between 1737 and 1739. The plant specimens mostly came from the Chelsea Physic Garden in London.
The earring pendants are stainless steel, and the glass cabochon measures 18 x 13mm. All earrings have sterling silver hooks and come in a sturdy card gift box.
